Merry Xmas from James and Sam

We just wanted to take this moment to wish you and your families the compliments of the season.

For everything good, bad, and otherwise that 2022 has thrown at us all, we’re all still punching on. And 2023 will, no doubt, be a highly interesting time in the markets.

In fact, we want to share with you something Sam wrote internally to our team at Southbank Investment Research just last week,

Now is a really cool, exciting time (believe it or not!) a lot of weird and wild developments happening from the world of biotech (animal cell grown foods – not as weird as it sounds, if anything way more sustainable and humane), quantum computing (it’s not a PC as you know it, yet), space technologies (the first EVER UK space rocket/satellite launch from Virgin Orbit could happen any day now or at least in the next week or so), energy (fusion net gain was achieved which is an historic moment for humanity, which is only retrospectively seen as such by most)… these are just a few things happening right now.

My message is that whatever you feel about the markets is not how you should necessarily act in the markets. Contrarian investing isn’t just about doing the opposite of the masses. It’s about taking action on opportunity that others fail to recognise because of biases and emotion. That typically means great internal struggle because we all have biases and emotions and switching those on and off isn’t an easy task.

But if you can be rational when others aren’t, can be logical and reasoned with a healthy splash of risk-tolerance, then these markets are bloody great fun!

This is something that we think is worth taking on board in the festive season.

Now speaking of the festive season, we thought we’d also share a couple of happy snaps to show you what we get up to after-hours…

James and his daughter Ivy were off for a bit of an ice-skate at the Battersea Power Station recently:

Sam completed “Phase 1” of his “full Griswold” transformation of his house, and is here with his son Max enjoying the lights… and yes still wearing his obligatory Aussie “flip flops” (in Australia they are called thongs):

And finally, we all love a Christmas jumper… but how good is yours truly? Is it as good as Sam’s?

It’s guaranteed to be worn tonight and on Christmas Day – and may have already had an outing or two. If you think you can beat that for a great Christmas jumper we’d love to hear about it!

We look forward to bringing you much more interesting and insightful research and opportunities in 2023.

Thanks again for being a valued reader of our work. We look forward to that continuing long into 2023 and beyond.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year,

Sam and James
