Update on ITM Power – sell half your stake

Late last year my colleague James Allen recommended you buy ITM Power, the UK-listed hydrogen company.

The stock has been a star performer in the fast-moving green hydrogen story. In fact, it’s gone up so much, so fast, that James is now recommending you sell half of your stake.

I’ll leave it to James to give you the full details below.

This note takes an unusual step.

ITM Power is our star performer, and one of the companies I am most excited about in the years to come.

With its incredible long-term revenue growth, sector leadership and industry tailwind, ITM remains well set to deliver great long-term returns for shareholders.

Its electrolysers are at the heart of the booming hydrogen economy, and it will soon gain inclusion in the MSCI UK Small Cap Index, which should see it receive an automatic wave of capital from ETF holders in that index.

But even though I am as confident and optimistic about the company’s future as they come, I have started to get a bit nervous about ITM Power’s incredible share price surge in recent days and weeks.

Indeed, in a spectacular day of trading, it rose as high as 285p on Tuesday 26 May and even surpassed 300p at one point today. That’s up from under 100p in mid-March!

I feel it’s imperative to turn that paper gain into a real gain, before the famously fickle investor sentiment turns.

However, I also wish to hold it – as it remains a true long-term play in my book.

So the instruction today is to sell half of your holding in ITM Power.

That way we bank half of our incredible profits, without forgoing future gains entirely.

I think that’s a reasonable balance given the current situation.

You may, according to your own situation, wish to take more or less profits than that – you are your own best financial adviser after all.

It’s a decision and a solution that wasn’t easy to come to, but I hope you think it’s reasonable.
